UPHRA is excited to present "Safe Spaces, Strong Teams: Promoting a Positive Workplace Climate." Join us at Northern Michigan University's Northern Center on the morning of Wednesday, August 9th, 2023, to learn more about workplace bullying and violence and how we can be best prepared to handle these situations. Lunch is provided.

Session Information:

Michelle Kaminski: Bullying and Other Forms of Psychological Violence in the Workplace

Attendees will learn how to:

  1. understand the frequency and impact of workplace bullying on employees and employers,
  2. address workplace bullying in different ways, and
  3. identify some additional organizational factors that negatively impact employee mental health in the workplace.


Chris Aldrich: Active Violence in the Workplace

Attendees will learn how to:

  1. prepare for an active violence (AV) incident,
  2. respond to an AV incident, and
  3. report suspicious situations / when to contact law enforcement.


About the Speakers:

Michelle Kaminski HeadshotMichelle Kaminski | Associate Professor | Michigan State University

Michelle Kaminski, Associate Professor, is the Associate Director of the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations at Michigan State University. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in organizational psychology. She is a recipient of a Wurf Fellowship from the Labor and Worklife Program at Harvard Law School.

Her academic work stems from the belief that all employees should be treated with dignity and respect on the job. This is reflected in her research, teaching, and service:

  • Her research includes topics such as diversity, employment discrimination, workplace bullying, and gender and leadership.
  • She has extensive outreach experience, teaching workshops for employees, managers, and union leaders on topics such as diversity, labor law, grievance handling, collective bargaining, leadership, workplace bullying, communication skills, and FMLA.
  • She has experience as a practitioner in grievance handling, facilitation, and alternative forms of dispute resolution.
  • She developed the minor in the Leadership of Organizations, currently the most popular minor in the College of Social Sciences, which includes a focus on organizational ethics and on diversity and inclusion.

Kaminski was editor of the Labor Studies Journal, the top academic journal in labor education, from 2009 to 2015. She previously served as Vice President – University of UALE, the primary professional association in her field.

Christopher (Chris) Aldrich has been a police officer for 20 years. He spent his first five years with the Negaunee Police Department and the past fifteen years with the Marquette Police Department (MPD). Chris is currently a Detective Lieutenant with the MPD. He is also a firearms instructor for MPD, which led to him training  officers and civilians on responding to active violence situations.
