Building a Workplace That Thrives on Generational Differences

Introduction: In today's dynamic work environment, understanding and managing generational differences is more critical than ever. For the first time in history, five distinct generations coexist in the workplace, each with unique expectations and preferences. This interactive workshop will explore the characteristics of Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z, offering insights into their workplace culture, communication styles, and professional development desires.

Workshop Overview: During this engaging 4-hour session, participants will delve into the generational dynamics shaping their workplaces. Through comprehensive overviews, role-playing activities, and hands-on exploration, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how to create an inclusive and productive work environment that leverages the strengths of all generations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Enhanced Understanding of Generational Differences:

o Participants will identify and articulate the key differences and commonalities among Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z, understanding how these impact workplace dynamics.

2. Effective Communication and Management Strategies:

o Attendees will be equipped with practical tools and techniques to manage and engage a multigenerational workforce, fostering a more inclusive and productive work environment through tailored communication, recognition, and professional development strategies.

3. Human Resources Support for Managerial Development:

o Participants will explore actionable strategies and a "toolbox" of activities to assist managers in meeting emerging workplace expectations, including coaching, frequent communication, conflict resolution, and leveraging the unique strengths of team members.

About the Speakers:


Rachel Harris

Rachel pursued her undergraduate degree in Communications at Northern Michigan University. Subsequently, she relocated to New Paltz, New York, where she served as a Residence Life Coordinator at SUNY New Paltz. During her tenure there, Rachel earned her certification as a New York State Mediator and was entrusted with overseeing university conduct. Rachel advanced her academic qualifications by obtaining a master’s degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from SUNY New Paltz. Following this, she joined Michigan Tech University, where she continued her role in managing student conduct.

Ultimately, Rachel returned to Northern Michigan University, where she is currently employed as the Director of the Center for Student Enrichment. She finds great fulfillment in working with diverse and unique personalities, fostering an environment where everyone is encouraged to strive for excellence and realize their full potential.

Dave Bonsall

Dave arrived at Northern Michigan University from Kingsford, MI, in the fall of 1969 and immediately developed an interest in student life. Dave graduated in 1973 after double majoring in Political Science and History. Upon graduation, he was employed as a Resident Director in NMU’s Residence Life Program. Dave then became the Director of the Student Activities Office that over time grew into the Center for Student Enrichment with primary responsibilities being student organization assistance, leadership development, student civic engagement, student activities, and service learning.

Dave is married to his wife, Sandy, and they have three grown children and three grandchildren. In the community, Dave is a member of the Janzen House Board and serves as the Vice President/ Public Relations Coordinator for the Marquette District of St. Vincent de Paul.
