Session I: Legal update

As the legal landscape surrounding employment continues to evolve, it’s essential for organizations to stay informed about new federal and state employment laws. This session will provide participants with the knowledge to identify recent legislative changes, assess their applicability to their workplace, and implement best practices for compliance.

Session II: Hiring Solutions 

In today’s dynamic workforce environment, staying ahead of market conditions and effective hiring strategies is crucial for attracting and retaining top talent. This training session will equip participants with the knowledge and tools to thrive in a competitive hiring landscape.

By the end of this training, participants will:

  • Gain insights into market conditions that impact talent pools.
  • Develop effective strategies for sourcing and retaining top talent.
  • Understand the role of technology in effective recruitment.
  • Enhance their ability to create a positive candidate experience.

About the Speakers:


Laura Katers Reilly

Attorney at Law at Kendricks, Bordeau, Keefe, Seavoy & Reilly, P.C.

Laura is a Marquette native. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and her law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School where she served as editor-in-chief of the Wisconsin Law Review. Laura maintains her Wisconsin licensure as a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin. Laura serves as a management representative on the board of the U.P. Labor-Management Council and is active in other local and civic organizations. She has also been named as a "Rising Star" in Michigan Super Lawyers.  She has a general practice with an emphasis on management-side labor and employment law, business law, real estate, and estate planning.


Jason Mack
Vice President of Business Development, MTEC SmartZone

As Vice President of Business Development, Jason Mack is devoted to connecting with the people of the Western U.P. to provide support that will help to create a positive impact on the community for future generations. 
For the last seven years in this role, Mack has served the community by listening, coaching, and identifying the resources needed to grow and scale clients’ ideas. The most rewarding part of his work is being able to cross paths with clients, past and present, and see how far they’ve come.

With a bachelor's in mechanical engineering and a master's in business management administration, Mack spent sixteen years in the automotive and aerospace industries leading large teams prior to this role. After leaving the corporate world, Mack obtained certifications in business incubation management and GrowthWheel to better serve the creative, smart, and unique people of the Western U.P. at MTEC SmartZone.

Outside of work, Mack is involved in the Superior Fab Lab, an organization that promotes creativity and innovation through digital fabrication and is proud to mentor various student organizations at Michigan Tech University. Another passion of his is contributing to the 1 Million Cups initiative, an inspiring platform that encourages entrepreneurs to showcase their ideas.

When he’s not working or volunteering, Mack is an avid mountain biker, hockey player, skier, and explorer of the outdoors. With an engineering mind, Mack also has a knack for building things. Whether it’s a grand project or fixing smaller gadgets, he finds great joy in the process of creation.

Above all, Mack adores and cherishes his family wholeheartedly and considers himself incredibly fortunate to have them by his side.



Jenna Smith

Market Manager, Manpower

Jenna Smith is the Market Manager for Manpower, creating impactful talent solutions for Upper Peninsula businesses. She has worked in HR in the UP for over a decade and enjoys solving complex staffing challenges. Jenna also serves as a City Commissioner in Marquette. She is a Marquette native and graduate of the University of Michigan. After living away for a decade in Ann Arbor and Boulder, CO, she returned home with her husband Lou to start their family. In her free time, you can find her cross-country skiing with Lou, beach days with her daughters Olive and Clara, hopping in the sauna with friends, or mountain biking with her rad parents.




Jody Johnson

Certified in Organizational Behavior Management, Jody has a broad skillset that includes marketing, wealth management and shareholder functions, and 16 years in key human resource functions. Her advisory services place special emphasis on hiring strategy, talent attraction, and acquisition. Holly Peoples

Director of Business Services, Upper Peninsula Michigan Works!

Holly Peoples has been in the Workforce Development world for 26 years serving in various positions across the region from direct client service provision to Board staff.  Her primary focus over the years has been in the realm of Business Services, with a team assisting companies with their hiring and training needs in all fifteen UP counties. She is a Certified Business Solutions Professional, Certified Workforce Development Professional and Certified Economic Development Professional. She currently serves on the board of directors for Upper Peninsula Economic Development Alliance.
